The 12V battery in an electric car: why it won't turn on and how to replace it
Updated November 6, 2026 · AutoPartes.cr

An electric car uses a small 12V battery to wake up its computers and connect the main battery. If that 12V battery is weak, the car won't turn on even when the main battery is full. The fix is usually to charge it or replace it with one of the same type and size, confirmed by your mechanic.
It's one of the most common surprises for new EV owners in Costa Rica: the car sat for a few days, the app says the battery is nearly full, but when you get in the screen stays dark, the key barely works, or the car won't go into ready mode. The culprit is almost never the big battery. It's the small 12V one. Here's what it does, how to tell it's failing, and how to get the right one.
Why does an electric car have a 12V battery?
Because the computers, lights, locks and the relays that connect the main battery all run on 12 volts, just like in a gas car. The big high-voltage battery drives the motor; the 12V battery wakes the car up.
When you switch the car on, the 12V battery powers the control modules and closes the contactors that connect the main battery. If it doesn't have enough charge, that step never happens and the car stays off, even with the main pack at 90%.
While the car is on or charging, an internal converter tops up the 12V battery from the main pack. That's why it often fails after the car has been parked for days.
What are the signs of a weak 12V battery?
They look a lot like a gas car with a low battery, minus the sound of the starter. If you notice several of these, have it checked soon.
- The car won't go into ready mode, or the screen is slow to come on.
- Warning messages on the dash that appear out of nowhere, often several at once.
- Locks, windows or the key fob respond slowly, or not at all.
- The screen reboots on its own, or the interior lights look dim.
- A 12V battery or charging system warning on the dash or in the app.
- The car acts up after sitting for days, but works fine when you drive it daily.
These symptoms can also come from another electrical fault, so have your mechanic test the battery before replacing it.

Why does an EV's 12V battery go flat?
Age, heat and use. Like any battery, it loses capacity over the years, and the heat in our coastal areas wears it out faster.
- Parked for many days. The modules keep drawing a little power even with the car off.
- Add-on accessories. Dash cams, GPS trackers or aftermarket alarms can slowly drain it.
- Doors or lights left on. A trunk that didn't latch or a cabin light left on can kill it overnight.
- An old battery. After a few years it can pass a test one day and fail the next.
If your car will sit for several weeks, check whether the manual recommends leaving it plugged in or using a battery maintainer.
Can you jump-start an electric car?
On many models, yes, but only at the points the manual shows, and carefully. Never connect anything to the main battery or the orange cables.
- Check the manual for the jump-start points; the 12V battery may be under the hood, in the trunk or under a seat.
- Use jumper cables or a portable 12V jump starter, connecting positive first, then negative, at the points shown.
- Turn the car on and leave it in ready mode for a while so the converter can recharge the battery.
- Don't use your EV to jump another car unless the manual says it's allowed.
If the battery goes flat again within a few days, it's no longer a charging problem: it needs replacing, or something is draining it.

Which 12V battery do I need, and what should I send for a quote?
You need one of the same type, size and terminal layout as the original. Some EVs use AGM lead-acid batteries and others, especially newer ones, use 12V lithium batteries; don't swap one for the other without confirming the car supports it.
To quote it right, send us:
- The car's 17-character VIN. If you can't find it, see where to find your car's VIN.
- The exact model, year and trim.
- A clear photo of the current battery's label, showing the type, capacity and any numbers.
- A photo of the battery in place, so we can see the terminal layout and how it's held down.
With that, we find a compatible battery in the US. Some batteries come with special shipping rules; if that affects the price or timing, we'll say so in the quote.
Can I replace the 12V battery myself?
On many cars it's a simple job, but on an EV it's worth having a trusted mechanic do it. Some models need a specific disconnect and reconnect order, or need the new battery registered in the system.
- Switch the car fully off and keep the key away, as the manual says.
- Don't touch anything high-voltage: the orange cables and the main battery are for a trained technician only.
- Take the old battery to a recycling point or leave it at the shop; don't throw it in the trash.
Before fitting the new battery, let your mechanic confirm it's the right one for your trim.
In short
If your EV won't turn on but the main battery is full, check the 12V battery first: it's cheap compared with the rest of the car, and it's usually the cause. If you drive a BYD, see what else wears out in our guide to BYD parts in Costa Rica, and for other brands read about parts for Chinese electric cars. Frequently asked questions
Why won't my electric car turn on when the battery is full?
Most likely the 12V battery is flat or failing. Without it, the car can't power up its computers or connect the main battery.
Does the 12V battery charge itself in an EV?
Yes, while the car is on and, on many models, while it's charging. If it sits off for many days, it can still go flat.
How long does an imported 12V battery take to arrive?
Usually 1 to 3 weeks. If that battery type has special shipping rules, we'll tell you in the quote.
How do I pay for the battery?
You pay a 50% deposit by card or SINPE Móvil when you accept the quote, and the rest when the part is delivered.
