Toyota Hilux parts in Costa Rica: the ones people order most

Updated October 27, 2026 · AutoPartes.cr

Quick answer

On a Hilux, the parts replaced most often are brake pads, shock absorbers, suspension bushings and ball joints, the clutch kit and filters, especially the fuel filter on diesels. Before ordering, confirm the generation, engine and drive type with the VIN or chassis number, because many parts change between versions.

The Hilux is everywhere in Costa Rica: on farms, at building sites, on tour runs, on the gravel roads of Guanacaste and the southern zone. It's a tough pickup, but because it works so hard, some parts wear out sooner than on a city car. Here's which ones, how to tell which version you have, and what we need to quote you the right part.

Which Hilux generation do I have?

Most Hilux trucks on Costa Rican roads are seventh generation (roughly 2005 to 2015) or eighth generation (from 2015–2016). Knowing which comes first, because almost every part changes from one generation to the next.

Generation Approximate years Common engines
Sixth Up to 2005 Earlier diesel and gasoline engines
Seventh 2005 to 2015 2.5 and 3.0 diesel, 2.7 gasoline
Eighth From 2015–2016 2.4 and 2.8 diesel, 2.7 gasoline

Exact years and engines vary with the country the Hilux was sold in and the trim. That's why we don't go by the year alone: the VIN or chassis number tells us exactly what yours has.

Which Hilux parts get replaced most?

Brakes, suspension and service parts top the list. A pickup that hauls loads and runs on gravel wears them faster:

  • Brakes: front pads, rotors and, on many versions, rear drum shoes.
  • Suspension and steering: shock absorbers, leaf spring bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends and control arm bushings.
  • Driveline: CV joints and their boots on 4x4s, and driveshaft U-joints.
  • Clutch: the full kit (disc, pressure plate and release bearing) on manual trucks.
  • Filters: oil, air, cabin and fuel.
  • Cooling and electrical: radiator, water pump, thermostat, alternator and starter.
  • Body and lights: headlights, taillights, mirrors and bumpers, especially after a knock.

If your brakes already squeal or grind, read our guide on when to replace brake pads before you order.

Do parts differ between diesel and gasoline?

Yes, for anything to do with the engine. Brakes and much of the suspension are usually shared within a generation, but it's always worth confirming.

What changes with the engine:

  • Fuel filter: on diesels it's a key part, because it protects the injectors. Many mechanics advise not stretching its interval.
  • Spark plugs or glow plugs: gasoline engines use regular spark plugs; diesels use glow plugs, which help with cold starts.
  • Injectors, water pump, belts and gaskets: specific to each engine.
  • Air and oil filters: they can differ even when two trucks look the same from outside.

Does 4x2 or 4x4 matter?

Yes, mostly at the front. A 4x4 has CV joints, a front differential and, on several versions, different front suspension from a 4x2. Some high-riding 4x2 trims also use different parts from the standard 4x2.

For body parts, also tell us whether it's a single cab, extra cab or double cab: bumpers, fenders and doors aren't the same.

Can you get Hilux parts in the United States?

Most of the time, yes. The Hilux isn't sold new in the US, but there are stores and distributors there selling genuine Toyota parts and reputable aftermarket brands for international models. Filters, spark plugs, bulbs and many wear parts are easy to find too.

When a part is hard to source, we tell you in the quote, before you pay anything. We don't keep parts in stock: we find and import each one to order, and it usually arrives in 1 to 3 weeks.

One thing to know: the Tacoma, which is sold in the US, is a different model. We don't assume a Tacoma part fits a Hilux; we only offer one if we've confirmed it's compatible.

What should I send to get a quote for a Hilux part?

The more detail, the lower the risk of ordering the wrong part. Send us:

  1. The year and, if you know it, the generation.
  2. The engine: diesel or gasoline, and the displacement if you know it.
  3. The drive: 4x2 or 4x4.
  4. The transmission: manual or automatic.
  5. The cab type, if it's a body part.
  6. The VIN or chassis number. Here's where to find your car's VIN.
  7. A photo of the old part or where it goes, if you don't know its exact name.

If your mechanic has already told you which part is failing, ask them to confirm its name or part number. And if you're unsure about a noise or a fault, have them diagnose it before you order.

In short

On a Hilux, brakes, suspension, the clutch and filters wear out most, and almost everything changes with the generation, engine and drive. With the VIN and a few details we confirm the right part. For brakes, also read when to replace brake pads, and when you're ready, request your free quote: we'll send you the total price in colones, no commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Do 4x2 Hilux parts fit a 4x4?

Some do, like many engine parts and rear brake parts, but a lot of the front end is different. That's why we ask for the VIN and confirm before buying.

Do you have Hilux parts in stock?

No. We import each part to order from the United States. It usually arrives in 1 to 3 weeks.

How much does an imported Hilux part cost?

It depends on the part, its weight and its size. Our quote already includes shipping, freight, duties, IVA and our service, and it's valid for 7 days.

How do I pay for a part for my Hilux?

You pay 50% when you accept the quote, by card or SINPE Móvil, and the other 50% when you receive the part.
